How can I help?

If you do great things, there are lots of ways I can help you to spread the word:

Public Relations

Does your organisation need a boost? Despite the tales of economic doom and gloom we hear in the news, there are lots of companies out there doing amazing work.

As a freelance PR professional I’ve worked for many inventive and socially responsible companies, including GSS Architecture and AMC Law. I’ve made sure the public get to hear about their innovative work by getting it featured in print, broadcast and online news.

I’ve worked both as a newspaper journalist and in PR for Irwin Mitchell LLP, so I know how to tell your story so it will catch a news editor’s eye. My extensive (and closely guarded) contacts list will ensure your story is heard by the right people.

Copywriting

Although writing is an artistic craft, it’s also one that can be used to achieve real commercial results. As a freelance writer, I’ve turned my hand to a wide range of commercial copywriting projects.

  • If you are selling a product online, I can write you a sales page using tried and tested techniques. I did this at Moneymagpie.com, learning from one of the industry’s top marketing copywriters, and successfully increased e-book sales.
  • Daunted by an upcoming public speaking engagement? I’ll research and write your speech, using my PR training to ensure your message is clear and can’t be misconstrued.
  • Sending a letter and want to get the tone just right? I’ll listen, offer feedback, and write with care.
  • Revamping your company website? I can write everything from the ‘About Us’ page to weekly online news, in a way that will improve your ranking in Google searches. I’ve just won a contract to write the website copy for a major national government organisation.
  • If you’re producing a tender document or a grant application, or if you’ve been asked to contribute to your industry magazine, I can almost certainly help. Sometimes scientists and those with technical skills benefit from a journalistic eye. I’ve been employed to re-write tender documents in a more accessible style.

Search Engine Optimisation and Social Media Marketing

  • Find it hard to get into the habit of using Twitter? Feel there are more creative ways you could be engaging customers using social media? I’ve helped companies such as Granta and Tees Solicitors to increase their Twitter followers, spark debates on Facebook, and completely revamped their fan pages.
  • Have a company website but can’t work out why it’s not showing up in a Google search? I have a number of methods for rectifying this.

Video

In my eyes one of the major bonuses of the web 2.0 revolution is the fact that it’s now so easy to make a video and put it on your company website. Videos dramatically improve your ranking in Google searches. They also give you so much more to work with than the written word alone. You can use colour, sound, visual effects and personality to put out a vivid, striking message.

I’ve worked with video in a number of different ways- presenting news stories to camera for the Northants Evening Telegraph, scripting, designing and directing my own video here, and talking financial security for insurance company Unum here.

The process of creating a video for your company involves meeting you to discuss your requirements, creating a script and storyboard, casting people to appear in the video and directing it. As I am not a cameraman or skilled video editor, (I dabble, but I’m not ready to offer this skill professionally) I can work with your cameraman. Alternatively, I highly recommend the services of Max Bilbow. Max is a really talented video maker. He’s got top quality HD cameras, all the lenses, umbrellas, booms and lighting malarkey you’ll need, and he’s very skilled at editing videos. We’ve worked together on many occasions and form a strong creative team.

CV checking

There’s nothing more off-putting for an employer than a covering letter or CV filled with spelling mistakes and bad grammar. Yet when you’re writing dozens of applications, it can be really hard to see anything wrong with what you have written.

For a flat rate of £15, I will spend 30 minutes looking over your CV, application form or covering letter, highlighting any mistakes, suggesting ways to re-word what you have written, and helping you to write a clear, well-structured document that addresses each part of the job specification.

Fast turnarounds available for last minute applications!

Journalism

I started out as a journalist, and love nothing more than investigating an issue, asking lots of cheeky questions, and writing everything from breaking news to features.

As a freelance journalist, I offer the following services:

  • Well-researched features and case studies produced to your word count and deadline (naturally!).
  • Reports from crime scenes, court cases, music gigs or other events. If I can get there, I will cover it.
  • A listening ear, and advice, for members of the public who think they might have a news story.
